What a contractor's website needs to do

People looking for a plumber, electrician or roofer are usually in one of two situations. Something is broken and they need help today, or they're planning a project and comparing a few companies. A good contractor website works for both.

• Your phone number, everywhere.

  On a phone, a tap-to-call button stays at the top of every page. Someone with water on the basement floor is not going to fill out a form.

• A clear list of what you do.

  Drain cleaning, panel upgrades, furnace installs, shingle replacement. If you don't take small jobs or commercial work, the site says that too.

• Where you work.

  The towns and neighbourhoods you cover, stated plainly. It helps people decide whether to call, and it tells Google where you do business.

• Proof you've done this before.

  Photos of real jobs, before and after shots, and your Google reviews. Licensing, insurance and trade certifications if they apply to your work.

• A quote request that asks the right questions.

  Type of job, location and the best time to reach them. Each request lands in your email, and you call back when you're off the tools.
